Chief Imam for Western Region dies

Sekondi- Muslims in the Western Region were thrown into a state of mourning following the demise of their Chief Imam, Alhaji Sanni Abdullah Bawa.

The 72-year-old passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2022, after a short illness at the Effia- Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.

Imam Bawa, who before May 21, 2022, was the Deputy Imam for over 11 years was turbaned as the substantive Regional Chief Imam when Imam Ustaz Ali Hassan Ali passed away.

Before that, he had been the Second Deputy Regional Imam since 1992 when Sheikh Jaafar Umar was the Regional Imam.

The demise of Imam Jaafar on April 2, 2011, led to his promotion to the role of Deputy Regional Imam.

His funeral prayer, thus salat- ul-janaiza (Muslim prayer proceeding burial), would be held after the prayer around Asr prayer Friday at Sekondi Zongo.

As a young man, Alhaji Sanni Abdullah Bawa was known to have exploits with the Black Stars, Republicans, Accra Hearts of Oak, and Sekondi Eleven Wise, in the 1960s and 70s as a football goalkeeper.

He has 14 children made up of eight females and six males.
