Accra: Comoros President Azali Assoumani joined Muslim worshippers at the Kanda National Mosque in Accra on Friday for Jummah prayers.

The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, welcomed the state guest and said special prayers for him at the end of a prayer session led by Sheikh Ibrahim Mohammed Awal.

Mrs. Joyce Bawah Mogtari, special aide to the president, welcomed President Assoumani and his wife, Ambari Daroueche, at the Kotoka International Airport earlier.

Mr. Assoumani had arrived in Ghana to discuss bilateral relations with the government and participate in the Africa Prosperity Dialogue (APD) 2025, held under the theme “Delivering Africa’s Single Market through Infrastructure: Invest. Connect. Integrate.”

The APD 2025 started on January 30 and ended on February 1, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

The event aims to foster constructive discussions on the critical role of infrastructure in advancing Africa’s economic prosperity.

The 66-year-old devout Muslim had served as the president of the Comoros from 2002 to 2006 and again since 2016, except for a brief period in 2019.

He became head of state after staging a coup in 1999 and was elected president in 2002, 2016, 2019, and 2024.

He also served as Chairperson of the African Union from February 2023 to February 2024.
