Eid-ul-Adha 2026: Government declares May 27 as public holiday

Accra: The government has declared Wednesday, May 27, 2026, as a public holiday for the celebration of Eid ul-Adha.
The Ministry of the Interior urged the public to observe the day as such.
This message was contained in a press statement signed by the minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and issued on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant events on the Islamic calendar.
It commemorates the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, who obeyed the command of Allah to sacrifice his then-only son, Ishmael.
The festival marked on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah on the Islamic calendar coincides with the conclusion of Hajj, the annual pilgrimage, which is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the “Greater Eid”, is marked by special prayers, the sacrifice of animals, and acts of charity, as Muslims around the world celebrate with family, friends, and those in need.
