Ghana’s Zainab Abdul Rahman places second at King Abdulaziz Qur’an Competition
Makkah, Saudi Arabia: Zainab Abdulrahman, a Ghanaian contestant, has placed second in the Complete Qur’an Memorisation with Tajweed category at the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’an Competition, winning a cash prize of SAR190,000, approximately GH₵559,415.48 Ghanaian cedis.
Ghana’s second-place finish was recorded in the female division, with Zainab competing against contestants from countries including Algeria, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Kenya.
Algeria’s Safa Iman bin Yahya won first place with a prize of SAR200,000, while Masfira bint Mahmoud of Bangladesh placed third and received SAR180,000.
Zainab’s achievement places Ghana among the countries whose contestants secured positions in the top five across the various categories of the prestigious international Qur’an competition, which brings together leading Qur’an memorisers and reciters from around the world.
Zainab was among four contestants who represented Ghana at the competition. The others were Abdul Razaq Usman Musah, who competed in the male Full Qur’an and Tajweed category; Abdul Latif Yakub, who competed in the male Full Qur’an and Tafseer category; and Fatima Mohammad Sani, who competed in the female Half Qur’an and Tajweed category.
The competition, organised by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, attracted 334 male and female contestants from 133 countries, with total prizes exceeding SAR10 million.
The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance and General Supervisor of Local and International Qur’an Competitions, Sheikh Dr Abdullatif bin Abdulaziz Al-Sheikh, approved the final list of winners.
The competition featured five categories for both male and female contestants, covering memorisation of the entire Qur’an under different requirements, as well as memorisation of 15 and five consecutive parts.
