Police arrest radio broadcaster for assaulting prophet-insulting pastor
Accra: The Ghana Police Service has arrested Sibaway Zakaria, a radio broadcaster who was captured in a viral video assaulting a pastor suspected of making derogatory remarks against the prophet.
The veteran broadcaster was arrested after the police initiated a manhunt.
He has since been in custody assisting with investigation and will be put before the court, the police said.
“Meanwhile, the Police Professional Standards Bureau is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, and all persons found culpable will be taken through the necessary disciplinary processes,” the police said in a social media post.
Alhaji Sibaway, popularly referred to as Papa Angola, is a Hausa broadcaster with vast experience in Hajj operations.
Following his arrest, the Pilgrims Affairs Office of Ghana (PAOG), a body mandated to manage Hajj activities, has disassociated itself from the suspect.
“We wish to state for the record that Alhaji ‘Sibamay’ Zakaria, who is popularly called Alhaji Papa Angola, is NOT a member of the Ghana Hajj Board and does not represent PAOG in any official capacity,” the office said in a statement.
“Any reports linking him to the Hajj Board are inaccurate.”
The assaulted pastor was apprehended for making derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammed.
His comments incited an imam to call for the killing of anyone who insulted the prophet.
Their remarks drew lots of condemnation from a large section of the populace, later culminating in their arrest.
