Prof. Gatsi appointed BOG advisor on Islamic banking and finance

Accra: Professor John Gatsi, Dean of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Business School, has been appointed as an advisor to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BOG) on non-interest/Islamic banking and finance.
He is to lead a team of experts to prepare for the introduction and implementation of Islamic banking and finance in Ghana.
Dr Johnson Asiama confirmed his appointment at the press conference of the 124th Monetary Policy Committee meeting in Accra on Friday, May 24, 2025.
Prof. Gatsi has over the years been an advocate for the introduction of non-interest banking and finance as an alternative to the conventional banking system in Ghana.
The professor of finance who joined the University of Cape Coast in 2007 as a lecturer in the then Department of Accounting and Finance also has expertise in financial economics, regulatory management, oil and gas management and law.
He became the first Head of Department of the Department of Finance from August 2016 to July 2019.
Dr John Gartchie Gatsi holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from the University of Ghana, Legon.
He also holds a Master of Science degree in Finance and a Master of Science degree in International Accounting from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, as well as a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden.
The Chartered Economist also has a PhD in Finance from Central University of Nicaragua and is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Accounting and Finance, School of Business, University of Cape Coast.
He is also a Chartered Petroleum Economist, a member of the Institute of Directors-Ghana, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Financial Management and the Association of CertifiedChartered Economists (ACCE).
He is also a lawyer and currently the Head of the Department of Finance, School of Business, College of Humanities and Legal Studies, University of Cape Coast.
He was a member of the panel of jurors that selected the 2015 Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists Flamingo Awards.
Prior to joining academia, he worked with Value Added Tax Service, focusing on tax debt management.
He is currently a member of the School of Business Advisory Board and coordinates the MBA Oil and Gas Programme under the Institute for Oil and Gas Studies, University of Cape Coast.
He provides training consultancy in financial economics and oil and gas management. He is the Founder and Director of the John Gatsi Educational Foundation.
