New York, US: Two Muslim siblings who died from drowning at the Corney Island beach in New York have been laid to rest on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at the Forest Green Park cemetery in Morganville, New Jersey.

According to the New York Police Department, Aisha Mohammed, 18 and Zainab Mohammed, 17, were declared missing on Friday, July 5, at around 8:10 p.m. and were found on the shoreline of the beach at about 9:15 p.m.

The teens, who drowned in the company of friends and relatives while swimming, were rushed to the Corney Island Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, the New York Post reported.

Prior to the burial, a Janaza (funeral prayer) was held in front of the Yankasa community mosque in the Mount Hope community of the Bronx on the same day.

The solemn event attracted hundreds of sympathisers and mourners, including the New York City mayor, Eric Adams.

“It is our responsibility that we feel this pain, to turn it into purpose, and to remind ourselves constantly that God is great,” said the mayor, as News 12 reported.

The elder sister of the teens, Mariam Mohammed, made an emotional appeal to mourners to remember her sisters with prayers.

“They (the siblings) don’t want to see anybody cry; they want to see everybody make dua for them,” she said as she broke down in tears.

The teens belonged to the Yanakasa Muslim community centre, a Ghanian Islamic and Cultural Centre, where they attended Madrasa (Islamic school) on weekends.
