Ghana National Mosque acknowledges concerns over viral “wedding party” video

Accra: Management of the National Mosque of Ghana says it acknowledges the concerns raised by the Muslim community regarding a viral video of a wedding party taking place within the confines of the main mosque building.
“We understand the emotions and questions it has evoked, and we sincerely assure you that your voices are heard and your concerns valued,” it said in a statement released on Sunday.
In the video that began circulating on Saturday, a man and a woman, supposedly a couple, were seen walking and dancing to a tune from large speakers mounted in the courtyard of the mosque.
Others who were cheering the two were also seen dressed and seated at tables, suggesting a party taking place.
Though the mosque management failed to directly render an apology in its statement, it has assured the community of its best efforts to investigate the matter and take the necessary action to maintain the sacredness of the worship place.
“As we review the context and specifics of the said video, we will work diligently to ensure that such unfortunate incidents do not happen again in the future.
“We take this opportunity to reaffirm our unwavering dedication to preserving the dignity, values, and sanctity of this sacred institution,” it added.
It has called on the Muslim community to be patient and be circumspect over the matter while providing constructive suggestions and sincere advice.
“We affirm that the criticisms and concerns are valid, and we do not seek to defend the actions of those who rented the premises,” the statement highlighted.
The 15,000-capacity facility situated on a 4.2-acre land at Kanda in Accra is the second largest mosque in West Africa.
The project was funded by the Turkish Human Development Association International (HUDAI) Foundation with the support of the Turkish government.
The complex comprises a mosque, a library, an office complex, a residential apartment, a research complex, a senior high school complex, a clinic, an administration block, an auditorium, and a conference centre.
The mosque is designed based on the historical Sultan Ahmed Mosque, also known as the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, Turkey.
