2026 Zakat threshold set at GHS 15,600 for silver and GHS 130,985 for gold

Takoradi: The Zakat valuation committee, a body put together by the National Chief Imam of Ghana, has announced the Nisab (Zakat threshold) for this year at GHS15,600 for silver and GHS130,985 for gold.
Nisab is the minimum threshold of net wealth, excluding personal expenses, housing, and debts, that a Muslim must possess for a full lunar year to be eligible to pay 2.5 per cent in Zakat.
It is defined by the value of gold or silver.
Alhaji Burhani Baba Wa’iz, a member of the committee, announced the new threshold during the 32nd annual Ramadan Conference held in Takoradi over the weekend.
“As of January 2026, which is Rajab (Islamic Lunar month), gold was sold in the world market at GHS 1,541 per gram. We must multiply this gram of gold by 85 as an indicator.
“With silver, it was sold in the world market at GHS 26.23 per gram and will be multiplied by 595,” he explained.
He encouraged Muslims, as recommended by scholars, to base their zakat threshold on silver so as to ensure more Muslims fall in the Zakat giving bracket for the less privileged to fully benefit.
