Adua for late deputy BOG governor to be held on September 15

Accra: Family members, friends, and sympathisers will join the Muslim community on September 15 to pray for Dr. Alhassan Mohammed, former and first Muslim Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

The solemn prayer marks the 40th day after the demise of the stalwart, who died on Thursday, August 8, 2024, after a protracted illness.

His Janaza (funeral prayer), which was witnessed by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, was held on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the Ghana National Mosque, Kanda, after Jummah prayers.

He was later buried at the East Legon Cemetery in Accra.

Dr. Mohammed, who was the director of the Research Department of the Bank, rose to the position of deputy governor from 1982 to 1986.

He also acted briefly as a governor before becoming the Ambassador of Ghana to Saudi Arabia and later Guinea-Conakry.

He was well known for his intellectual and financial support to the Muslim community in Ghana.

The 92-year-old was of immense support to the construction of the Abossey Okai Central Mosque and keeping the mosque under the control of Muslims.

He was also known for writing articles to correct inconsistencies and inaccuracies published about the Muslim community.

Key among his works was a 2010 book titled “Determination and Conflict in a Muslim Society: Abossey Okai Central Mosque.”.

The book sought to address misconceptions surrounding the National Chief Imam position in Ghana.
