Amin Adam set to become Ghana’s first Muslim finance minister

Accra: The Member of Parliament (MP) for Karaga Constituency, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has been nominated as the Minister for Finance designate.

The appointment makes him the first Muslim in Ghana’s history to occupy the position, pending a successful vetting and swearing in.

The former Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance takes over from Ken Ofori-Atta, who has served in that capacity since 2017.

The announcement of his nomination was contained in press statement issued by the Office of the President on Wednesday, February 14, 2024

The 49-year-old was a former Deputy Minister for Energy responsible for the Petroleum Sector and, in 2005, a Deputy Regional Minister for the Northern Region.

He had a stellar career in the extractive and resource management sectors, where he worked extensively as a university lecturer, advisor on resource governance, and advocate for transparency in resource management around the globe.

He founded and became the first Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP).

He also worked in other public and private organisations as an Energy Policy Analyst at the Ministry of Energy in Ghana, Commissioner of the Ghana Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, and Africa Coordinator of Extractives Industries in Ibis, amongst many other positions held.

He attended the Northern School of Business from 1988 to 1990 and holds a PhD in Petroleum Economics from the Centre for Energy, Petroleum, and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) of the University of Dundee in the UK, specialising in petroleum fiscal policy in resource-led economies and resource governance.

He also has an MPhil (Economics) and a B.A. (Hons) in Economics from the University of Cape Coast. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Certified Economists of Ghana (ICEG).

He has also undertaken professional development training at Colombia University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Harvard University in the US.

He is currently the chairman of the National Energy Transition Committee, the Gold for Oil Initiative, and the New Producers Group (a group of new oil and gas-producing countries in the world).
