ASWAJ maintains Sheikh Kamil as first deputy national Imam

Accra: Delegates at the 16th National Representative Congress of the Ahlussunna Wal Jama’a (ASWAJ) Ghana have reaffirmed Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed as its first National Deputy Imam.
They also elected Sheikh Mohammed Amin Osman as the second Deputy Imam, with Sheikh Hajj Umar Ibrahim being the undisputed Imam of the Muslim group.
The election witnessed by the top hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service was meant to bring finality to a long-standing dispute over the deputy Imam positions that had been lingering over the past two years.
At the end of the election, the 16 regional imams of the Muslim group paid their allegiance to the elected through handshakes and embraces.
It would be recalled in November 2023 that the ASWAJ national Imam, Hajj Umar Ibrahim, granted an interview registering his displeasure with attempts to make Sheikh Kamil the first deputy Imam.
He disclosed that he had on three occasions rejected the elevation of Sheikh Kamil from the position of second deputy national imam to the first deputy national imam.
The four-day event, which began on Thursday, November 13, and ended on Sunday, November 16, 2025, was held on the theme “Standing by the Quran and the Sunnah for Unity”.
Participants included members of the National Advisory Board, the National Representative Assembly, the National Dawa’a Council, the National Dawa’a Committee, the regional imams and their deputies.
Also present were special invited guests from selected institutions and organisations.
The congress also accepted revised constitutional provisions that were amended by the National Representative Assembly.
In a solidarity message, a senior cleric, Sheikh Bashir Nyandu, called for the unity of members belonging to the Muslim organisation so as to achieve its goals.
He urged members to accord the leadership of the group the due respect they deserved.
In his acceptance speech, Sheikh Kamil called for harmony and urged members to eschew bickering and backbiting, which could lead to discord among group members.
