Bawku Conflict: Two brothers gunned down while attending father’s burial
Accra: Two brothers attending the burial of their late father were among the victims of fresh violence that erupted in the Bawku township.
Reports indicate that Abee Waqaas Dimba and his brother were gunned down by unknown assailants who chased and stopped their vehicle before killing them at close range.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened when they were returning to Kumasi on Sunday after the burial of their late father, who passed away on Friday in Bawku.
Other sources also indicated that they were denied entry into the Bawku township because of the chieftaincy dispute and so decided to return to Bolga to decide on what action to take.
On their journey back to Bolga, they were followed by some unknown gunmen and were instructed to get out of the vehicle before shooting the elderly brother first and later killing Abee Waqas.
A sibling of the two was said to have escaped into nearby bushes discretely.
“Just yesterday he (together with his brothers) buried their father and decided to leave the same night. They met some gunmen on the way who shot him and his senior brother, while his junior brother and the driver got to escape by Allah’s will.
“His only purpose for going there was to bury his father, but Allah said he shall be buried together with his father. We plan; Allah plans, and He is the best of planners,” Sumaila Musah, a close friend of the victim, wrote on his Facebook page.
Abee Waqas was known for his philanthropic activities that included the construction of boreholes and catering for orphans.
He was also a committed student of Darulhadith, a pro-Salafi learning centre located in Kumasi of the Ashanti region.
At a press conference, the leader of the organisation, Sheikh Anas Tawfiq, has called on the government to take the necessary measures to save the lives of innocent civilians who have suffered in the long-standing conflict.
He also expressed condolences to the family and prayed for the souls of victims of the violence.
