Accra: Presidential candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have donated vehicles to the National Muslim Conference of Ghana (NMCG) and the Zakat and Sadaqa Trust Fund, respectively.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP and John Dramani Mahama of the NDC made the gestures when they attended the fourth annual National Muslim Conference of Ghana that took place over the weekend.

Dr. Bawumia was the Special Guest of Honour for the opening ceremony and John Mahama, the Special Guest of Honour for the closing ceremony.

In his remarks on Friday, Dr. Bawumia said the gesture of donating a vehicle was to support the NMCG, which was faced with logistical challenge to perform its duties.

“I understand that the National Muslim Conference has been facing some challenges, such as funding transportation, office space, and so on.

“I know that a request has been made that I provide a vehicle to the conference, so I will provide a vehicle to assist their operations,” he said.

He encouraged Muslims to pay their Zakat regularly into the Zakat fund to enable the NMCG to provide the needed financial support towards the implementation of the laudable programmes and projects.

On Sunday, John Mahama announced that he had procured a vehicle based on the request of Alhaji Baba Adam, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zakat and Sadaqa Trust Fund.

The vehicle is meant to aid the operations of zakat collection and revenue mobilisation for the development of the Muslim community in Ghana.

He also pledged to review the Muslim Marriage Ordinance of 1951, Cap. 129, and streamlining the legal framework for the recognition and certification of Muslim marriages in Ghana.
