Bawumia makes post-inauguration visit to Makkah for Umrah
Accra: Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia arrived in Makkah on Thursday to perform Umrah, which is a minor hajj ritual.
He was accompanied by his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, and some Muslim stalwarts in the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
They included Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, the past Minister of Finance; Mustapha Ussif, immediate past Minister of Youth and Sports; Habib Iddrisu, Member of Parliament for the Tolon constituency; and Hassan Tampuli, MP for Gushegu.
“I arrived in Mecca yesterday to perform Umrah (Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca). This is to thank Almighty Allah for His grace. We also prayed for guidance and protection for us and for our nation, Ghana,” he said on his Facebook page.
His pilgrimage to the Muslim holy land takes place barely 72 hours after attending the swear-in of his rival, John Dramani Mahama, as the president of the Republic of Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia contested the December 7 general election on the ticket of the and lost.
At the inauguration, he was commended for his diplomacy that manifested in his beaming smiles, warm pleasantries with guests, and a bow to the new president, demonstrating his humility and respect for authority.
