Shia Imam Calls for Immediate Mediation in Sharubutu-Yahya Al Amin Impasse
Accra: Sheikh Abubakar Ahmad Kamaludeen, the Imam of the Shia Muslim Community, has made a passionate appeal to Tijjaniya scholars to step in and resolve the lingering feud between National Chief Imam Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu and his estranged former disciple, Sheikh Yahya Al Amin.
Speaking at a Maulid celebration hosted by the Greater Accra Bissa Imam, Sheikh Imam Hassan and attended by the National Chief Imam, the Shia Imam stressed that religious leaders have a divine duty to broker peace.
“If we don’t see to that, Allah will punish us,” Sheikh Kamaludeen cautioned.
He noted that while disagreements are inevitable, letting the rift drag on is unacceptable, particularly given the Chief Imam’s advanced age.
“You do not have a scholar in Ghana like Mallam, and after Mallam, you do not have anyone else like Mallam Yahya.” urging the Tijaniyya community (People of Faila) to prioritise unity.
The rift dates back several years. In October 2023, a grieving Sheikh Sharubutu publicly criticised Zongo chiefs and Muslim scholars for failing to hold his former protégé accountable.
The centenarian leader expressed pain over enablers who supported the student in severing ties with the mentor who raised, educated, and once named him as a successor.
Despite past grievances, reconciliation efforts appear promising.
Sheikh Yahya Al Amin was recently spotted among the distinguished guests at the National Maulid hosted by the Chief Imam in Fadama, signalling a potential step toward healing.
