Accra: The old edifice of the Legon Central Mosque has been pulled down to make way for a befitting ultra-modern mosque complex that will accommodate the growing Muslim community of the University of Ghana.

The once serene prayer ground has temporarily become a construction site as the demolishing of the edifice was underway.

As of Monday afternoon, the metal structures that once provided shelter for large congregations, especially on Jummah days, have been dismantled, while the one-storey structure has been razed to the ground with heavy equipment.

The project is undertaken by Qatar Charity, an Islamic non-governmental organisation, and Japan Motors, an automobile company with JM project management office named as consultant.
