Former finance minister Amin Adam commissions 6,000-capacity Masjid Al-Noor Mosque in Tamale

Tamale: Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, former Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Karaga, has commissioned the 6,000-capacity Masjid Al-Noor at Wayamba on the Tamale Airport Road.
The building fulfils a lifelong dream to serve Islam and humanity through the establishment of a house of worship.
The mosque, whose construction began in June 2024 and was completed in June 2026, is expected to serve as a centre for worship, Islamic education, research and community development in the Northern Region.
Masjid Al-Noor, which translates as “The Mosque of Light”, has an internal prayer capacity of 6,000 worshippers, while its outer courtyard can accommodate an additional 4,000 people during Friday congregational prayers and major Islamic celebrations, making it one of the largest mosques in Ghana.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on Friday, Dr Amin Adam said the project originated from a childhood aspiration inspired by his early Qur’anic education.
He said that as a young student of the Qur’an, he had always hoped to establish a mosque dedicated to the worship of Allah and the service of the Muslim community.
He urged Muslim scholars to deal with each other with leniency and patience, as the practice of scholars being harsh to one another in utterances was non-Islamic.
He expressed gratitude to individuals who have made enormous contributions to support the mosque.
Dr Amin Adam said Masjid Al-Noor was conceived as a holistic Islamic centre that would promote spiritual growth, Qur’anic education, family counselling, research, community outreach and intellectual development.
He was hopeful that the facility would nurture future generations of Muslims while strengthening social cohesion and promoting the values of faith, knowledge and service.
The mosque was designed and constructed by Alhaji Engineer Kabiru Idris of Shaddis Limited, Kumasi, whose work transformed the founder’s vision into reality.
Beyond its role as a place of worship, the mosque houses the Sheikh Adam Issah Centre for Islamic Research, which comprises an Islamic library and a school aimed at promoting Islamic scholarship and the moral development of children and young people.
The research centre honours the late Sheikh Adam Issah, an eminent Qur’anic teacher who devoted his life to Islamic education until his death on May 22, 1983.
The mosque complex also houses the offices of the Noorul Hayat Foundation, an Islamic charitable organisation established to support humanitarian and community development initiatives.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former vice president, said building and maintaining the house of Allah is both a great honour and a responsibility for believers.
He said being able to construct a place of worship was also a wonderful privilege Allah bestows on those he chose.
Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways and MP for Tamale North, commended Dr Adam and described him as an inspiration and an ideal role model for young Muslim politicians.
“Indeed, there is a joke among us. It is a fact, and we all know that if he didn’t become a politician, he would have become a sheikh or an imam,” he said.
Traditional rulers, politicians and religious leaders including the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu and Imam of the Abuja National Mosque, Professor Ibrahim Ahmed Maqari who attended the commissioning commended Dr Amin Adam for the initiative.
The commissioning of Masjid Al-Noor adds to Ghana’s growing network of modern Islamic centres that combine worship with education, research and community service, reflecting the evolving role of mosques in national development.
In a Facebook post, former minister of information Dr Mustapha Abdul Hamid, who was present at the commissioning ceremony, expressed delight at the modelling of the mosque as an educational centre.
“I hope to contribute to its future growth by serving as a visiting researcher. I pray that its board can envision it in line with renowned mosque-universities like Al-Azhar. He said.
It would be recalled that Ghana’s first Muslim finance minister marked his 52nd birthday with the inauguration of a one-storey classroom block for the Markaziyya Islamic School at Zogbeli, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
The project included a 12-seater water closet facility, offices, a store, and a staff common room to support both teaching and learning in the school.
In February this year, handed over a 300-capacity-bed dormitory to the Anbariyya Islamic Institute in Tamale.
In November 2025, he inaugurated a newly constructed 12-unit, one-storey classroom block at his alma mater, Tamale Senior High School (TAMASCO), in the Sagnarigu Municipality.
