Accra: The Muslim presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost the bid to become Ghana’s president to former president John Dramani Mahama.

The Electoral Commission on Monday declared Mahama, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the winner of the presidential election that took place on December 7, 2024.

Based on provisional results from 267 out of 276 constituencies, the winner secured 56.55 percent of votes while Dr. Bawumia had 41.61 percent.

Dr. Bawumia, flanked by the party executives, had on Sunday conceded defeat in an address to ease tension, a move well commended by observers and other stakeholder groups.

He pledged his support to the incoming government to develop the country.

The two presidential candidates had enormously supported the Muslim community in the run-up to the election.

They included the donation of vehicles, financial medical support, construction of mosques, sponsorship of Muslim events, among others.

John Mahama has, among other things, pledged to establish a pilgrimage authority, pass laws to recognise Muslim marriages, and join the Islamic Development Bank.
