Dr Mustapha Hamid advocates adding Islamic jurisprudence courses to legal education

Accra: Dr Mustapha Hamid, former information minister has advocated teaching Islamic jurisprudence as part of the country’s legal education curriculum.
He noted that the teaching of Islamic jurisprudence as either a full-blown course or a regular jurisprudence courses in law faculties would equip students to address complex legal issues in a multicultural context.
“I believe that it will enable our lawyers to better appreciate the cases of their Muslim clients, especially litigations in respect of marriage, divorce and inheritance,” he said.
He made the call at an Iftar organised by the Ghana School of Law Muslim Students Association in Accra on Friday, March 28, 28, 2025.
The theme for the event was ‘Reflections on the ideals of Ramadan: Lessons for a nation in search of development’.

Dr Abdul-Hamid, also an academician said understanding Islamic jurisprudence offers valuable insights into justice, equity, and governance, which will foster inclusivity and deepen students’ appreciation of the country’s diverse legal heritage.
He urged the Ghana School of Law, known for its commitment to excellence in legal training, to consider the proposal as part of efforts to enhance the scope and relevance of its academic offerings.
Dr Abdul Hamid’s underscored the need for a legal education system that embraces diversity and prepares future lawyers to navigate the complexities of a globalised world.
