Ghana to begin Ramadan crescent search on February 28

Accra: Muslims in Ghana will embark on a nationwide search for a crescent moon on Friday, February 28 to begin the Ramadan fast on Saturday, March 1, 2024.
If not found, the Ghanaian Muslim population would start their obligatory fasting on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
This information was carried in a communique issued at the end of a two-day Ramadan conference on Saturday.
“The first day of sighting of the moon shall start on Friday, which is the 28th day of February, and that is the 29th day of Shaban.
“If the moon is sighted on that Friday, Saturday, the first day of March, shall be the first day of Ramadan,” the communique highlighted.
Alhaji Osuman Seidu, the Deputy Executive Secretary, Office of the National Chief Imam, read the document.
The 31st Annual Ramadan Conference organised under the auspices of the National Chief Imam was held on the theme, “Peace and Unity are Essential for Ghana’s Progress.”
Participating in the conference are the regional Imams of 14 regions, representatives of some Muslim sects, the Ghana Muslim Mission and the Federation of the Muslim Women Associations of Ghana (FOMWAG).
Alhaji Mustapha Abubakar, a representative of the president, said the month of Ramadan is a period of endurance as it tests the will of Muslims for peace.
“If there is anything that will provoke, you have to avoid it. In Ramadan you are peaceful to the extent that even if somebody slaps you, you have to say, I forgive you because I am fasting,” he said.
He expressed the gratitude of the president to the Muslim community for their support and prayers during the campaign and election period.
He assured them of the government’s commitment to fulfilling pledges that included fighting galamsey and corruption.
Sheikh Dr. Amin Bonsu, the Chairman of the Ghana Muslim Mission and the Co-Chair of the closing ceremony, called for unity and peaceful coexistence.
The special guest of honour for the occasion was the Ga Manste, King Tachie Teiko Tsuru II.
He remarked that it was important to establish decorum and discipline regarding the start and ending of the Ramadan fast.
He therefore commended the Muslim leadership for the initiative to unify all Muslim groups for the Ramadan fast.
