Accra: The government has, through its ministry of the interior, declared Monday, March 31, 2025, as a public holiday and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as an additional public holiday for the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr.

The declaration was by an Executive Instrument (E.I.), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601).

Muslims in Ghana are likely to mark the end of the 29 or 30 days of Ramadan fasting either on Sunday, March 30, 2025, or Monday, March 31, 2025, based on the sighting of the new crescent moon.

In a statement, the interior ministry said that in view of Sunday being a weekend, the government has decided to make Monday a public holiday and Tuesday an additional holiday.

Granting Muslims two days to celebrate Eid ul-Fitr had been a key campaign promise of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) led by John Dramani Mahama in the run-up to the 2024 general elections.

The additional holiday was meant to grant Muslims the liberty to celebrate the Eid regardless of the complexities surrounding moon sighting, which creates a situation where some Muslims marked Eid on days that are not necessarily declared holidays.
