Accra: Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised prospective Umrah pilgrims inside the country to temporarily suspend their travel plans.

This is due to the rapidly evolving security situation in parts of the Middle East, which has led to uncertainties and inconveniences for travellers.

In a statement, the ministry noted that travel arrangements for Umrah may be affected; hence, the need for necessary precautions.

“The safety and well-being of Ghanaian nationals remain the government’s utmost priority,” the statement read.

For citizens already in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, the ministry advises them to remain calm, comply strictly with directives issued by local authorities, and maintain regular contact with their travel agents, the Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate.

On February 28, 2026, Israel and the U.S. started the ongoing conflict with Iran by deploying coordinated air and missile strikes deep inside Iran, targeting military facilities, nuclear-related infrastructure, and the capital, Tehran.

Multiple explosions were reported across key urban centres, and Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the initial strikes.

Tehran has responded with ballistic missiles and drone strikes against Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf region, hitting Bahrain and other Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia, which are hosting American forces.

The Iranian forces have also launched strikes that caused infrastructure damage, including at civilian airports and commercial ports, and prompted widespread defensive responses across the region.
