Hundreds gather to pray for slain Imam Hassan Sharif
Newark, New Jersey: Muslims from 60 Masajids (mosques) in New Jersey gathered on Saturday at the NIA Masjid and Community Centre to hold the Janaza (funeral) prayer for Imam Hassan Sharif.
The prayer was led by Sheikh Daud Haqq, Imam of the NIA Masjid and Community Centre.
The late Imam of Masjid Muhammad Newark suffered from multiple gunshot wounds sustained by a yet-identified assailant on the morning of Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at the Masjid premises.
He later passed away at the University Hospital in Newark, where he was receiving treatment.
Imam Sharif made statements on social media about assassination attempts on his life in August of last year, which the local law enforcement authority ignored.
Since his passing, the authorities have announced a $25,000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest of perpetuators, while the Council on American-Islamic Relations-New Jersey chapter pledged a $10,000 reward on Thursday.
Imam Sharif, born Alonzo Kitchen, was a resident of Newark who committed to Islam as a young adult.
He was a known community activist who often protested gun violence in a bid to make the community safe.
He was married with two children.
Imam Sharif was buried at the Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover.
