Ghana has more Muslim males than females – Census Report

Accra: The population of Muslim males in Ghana exceeds that of Muslim females by 1.86 percent, the 2021 Population and Housing Census report has disclosed.

This is contrary to the national trajectory, where the female population in Ghana exceeds that of the male population by 1.42 percent.

According to the census report released by the Ghana Statistical Service, the Muslim population of Ghana was 6,108,530, consisting of 3,111,280 Muslim males and 2,997,250 Muslim females.

The Muslim male population represented 50.93 percent of the entire Muslim population and was equivalent to 20.5 percent of the total male population of 15,159,792.

On the other hand, the female Muslim population represented 49.07 percent of the Muslim population and 19.2 percent of the total Ghanaian female population of 15,593,535.

On a regional basis, the male Muslim population exceeded that of the female Muslim population in all regions except the four regions of Northern, North East, Upper East, and Upper West, where the Muslim female population exceeded that of the male Muslim population by 1.31 percent, 3 percent, 2.24 percent, and 0.61 percent, respectively.

According to the report, there were about 2,562,629 Muslims living in rural areas, with 51.5 percent being males and 48.5 percent being females.

Meanwhile, there were about 3,545,901 Muslims living in urban areas, of whom 50.5 percent were males and 49.5 percent were females.

The three regions with the highest Muslim male population were the Northern region (761,423), the Ashanti region (446,907), and the Greater Accra region (324,582).

On the other hand, the three regions with the lowest Muslim male population were the Volta region (40,354), Ahafo region (49,613), and Oti region (51,238).

The regions with the highest female Muslim population were the Northern region (771,554), the Ashanti region (419,210), and the Greater Accra region (307,009).

Similarly, the Volta, Ahafo, and Oti regions had the lowest Muslim female population of 36,782; 43,540; and 46,690, respectively.
