Accra – Initiative for Youth Development (IYD), a non-profit organisation committed to improving the lives of young people in the Zango communities has launched the “2018 Year of the Zango Entrepreneur” campaign.

The campaign sought to create awareness on the relevance of entrepreneurship in job creation and improving livelihoods.

The year-long programme consists of activities such as fora on economic opportunities, technology and entrepreneurship, technology start-up competition, training workshops, exhibitions and media campaigns on start-ups.

Mohammed Alhassan, Director for Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation for the Ministry of Inner city and Zongo development speaking on behalf of the Minister for Inner Cities and Zongo Development, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique, said work was almost complete for a medium-term plan to harmonise stakeholder efforts in developing the Zango communities.

He urged the management of IYD to furnish his ministry with an action plan that clearly indicated the role of the ministry as a partner.

“To ensure that the activities of IYD are well integrated into the medium-term plan of the ministry, I would urge the management of IYD to convert all their initiatives planned for 2018 into an action plan with clear roles for the ministry as partners and from that, we can build a solid partnership,” he said.

Abdul Salam Mohammed Daaru, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Zongo Business Incubator (ZOBI), a campaign partner said the lack of funding has been a major challenge in running business incubators in the country.

He said securing good facilitators came at a huge cost and was deterring many young entrepreneurs from participating in training programmes that are organised.

“You need to pay facilitators and we believe in using excellent facilitators. We don’t believe that anyone can just get up and inspire, it is about skills. And when you have these workshops and programmes most of our young entrepreneurs are not able to pay for such workshops,” Mr Daaru said.

A Counselling Psychologist, Asmau Ayub advised the youth to assess themselves before embarking on any entrepreneurial venture.

She encouraged them to shun the practice of going into certain lines of business simply because it was in vogue.
