Islamic SHS NSMQ exit dashes trophy hopes of Islamic schools
Accra: Islamic Senior High School (SHS) Kumasi, the only remaining Islamic second-cycle school in the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), has been kicked out of the competition.
Their impressive run ended when they met eight-time champions Presbyterian Boys Secondary School (PRESEC) Legon and St Louis SHS at the one-eighth stage of the competition on Thursday.
After five rounds of the contest, PRESEC, Legon, secured a quarter-final spot by winning with 67 points, while St Louis SHS got 47 points and Islamic SHS, Kumasi, had 19 points.
A total of 81 schools qualified for the one-eighth stage of the 2026 NSMQ.
They included 27 seeded schools (pre-qualified from the previous year) and 54 non-seeded schools that advanced through the intense 2026 preliminary rounds.
Since inception in 1994, the highest-performing Islamic school in the history of the NSMQ is T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, Kumasi (popularly known as Real AMASS).
They were the fifth-ranked school in their 2019 campaign when they reached the quarter-final stage of the competition and amassed the fifth-highest score.
