Accra – Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed, the National Deputy Imam of Ahlu Sunna wal Jamma, says the Muslim sect is watchful of Members of Parliament (MP) who support the activities of the LGBTQ community.

He urged Muslim electorates to do away with MPs whose advocacy for LGBTQ would incur the wrath of Allah and would not inure to the spiritual growth of the country.

“We are calling on our MPs, who are working openly and behind the scenes to delay the bill, that we will resist them with all our might.

“As for politicians seeking the mandate of electorates to become lawmakers, we will be monitoring their campaign,” he said when he delivered the sermon after leading the Eid ul Adha prayers at the forecourt of the State House.

The Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, 2021, which was introduced to the House in July 2021, underwent its First Reading by Parliament on Monday, August 2, 2021.

The proposed legislation, which aims to provide for proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values, seeks to restrict LGBTQ+ communities and any activities related to them.

The new Bill would further criminalise the promotion and funding of LGBTQ+ activities as well as public displays of affection, cross-dressing, and more, while campaigning for LGBTQ+ persons on social media or online platforms is also prohibited under the Bill.

The Bill further seeks to provide for protection and support for children, persons who are victims or accused of LBBTTQQIAAP+ and related activities, and other persons and related matters, while people advocating the rights of these LGBT will also be penalised.
