Wife of late Ayawaso East MP declares intention to contest vacant seat

Accra: Hajia Amina Adam, widow of Naser Toure, the late Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East Constituency, says she is contesting the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries for the vacant constituency seat.
She declared her intention in a statement released on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
She said she has taken note of several calls for her to “step into the shoes of my late husband” who served the East Ayawaso Constituency with distinction.
“I have pondered over the calls from well-meaning members of the constituency, especially the elders and grassroots, and in so doing, I accept the call to serve my people.
“As the seat has been declared vacant by the Electoral Commission and a notice of primaries issued by the general secretary of our party, I humbly submit myself to contest for the position of the MP for East Ayawaso Constituency,” she said.
In justification for her decision, she said contesting for the position has become a responsibility of continuing the legacy of transforming lives that her late husband started.
“As a mother who cares for her children, the poor, the vulnerable, widows, orphans, and many of our youth who need jobs to make a living, I have a duty to step into those big shoes of my late husband…” she noted.
She expressed appreciation for the sympathy and support from loved ones who were present since the demise of her husband on January 4, 2026.
Her decision to contest has been of major concern to the Muslim community since posters of the widow contesting as MP surfaced online weeks ago.
In accordance with Islamic customs, a Muslim widow is to observe a mourning period of four months and 10 days, during which she is not to beautify herself, go outdoors, interact with non-related males, or entertain proposals of marriage.
It has therefore been a concern of many, including scholars, as to how the Muslim widow would actively be campaigning for a vacant seat as she observed the mandatory mourning period.
