Contending Imam urges politicians to stop meddling in Volta Imam dispute

Accra: Sheikh Alfa Anas Hamidu, a contending Volta Regional Imam, has appealed to politicians to stop meddling in the ongoing Volta Regional Imam dispute.
He urged them to either be just in the matter or stop fueling the dispute by taking sides.
“Our political leaders. We beg them…if they can’t do justice, they should keep quiet. Everything will go. But so far as they are meddling in this thing, trouble will come,” he said.
He made the appeal in the aftermath of a mosque shooting incident where some 11 persons were injured by masked gunmen in an attempt to disrupt Jummah prayers (Friday noon congregational prayers).
Sheikh Hamidu was the deputy Volta Regional Imam before the demise of the substantive Imam in 2013.
His automatic promotion to the role of the regional Imam is, however, being contested by Alhaji Muniru Ali, a 53-year-old statistician.
Alhaji Ali was officially introduced to the traditional rulers as the Volta regional Imam by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, in November this year.
Despite the endorsement for the de facto Muslim leader, some Muslim youth of Ho Zongo have vowed to reject any attempt to dislodge Sheikh Hamidu as the Imam of the Ho Central mosque, where he leads Friday prayers.
Victims of the gunshots are responding well to treatment, while the police have lodged a manhunt for the perpetrators.
