Accra: Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, Minister for the Interior, has held mediation talks with Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, on the temporary closure of the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region.

The talks come after an earlier meeting between the minister and a delegation from the Ho Muslim community.

The delegation included chiefs, elders, and clerics.

The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Ministry of Interior, announced the temporary closure of the Central Mosque for two weeks, with effect from Thursday, January 1, 2026.

This was after five masked men reportedly opened fire in the mosque on December 26, 2025, triggering panic and chaos among worshippers who were preparing the place for Jummah prayers.

At least, 10 people sustained gunshot injuries.

While the exact motive for the attack has not been officially communicated, the incident is widely believed to be connected to a protracted regional imamship dispute.

The REGSEC had also declared the location a crime scene to facilitate further investigation.

Despite the two weeks closure announced earlier, the mosque has remained closed over the past month prompting the Muslim community to seek a resolution to the impasse.
