IGP Yohuno courts support of Chief Imam to enforce law

Accra: The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno is calling for collaboration between the Muslim community and the Ghana Police Service to maintain peace and enforce law and order.
He urged the community to prioritise dialogue as a means of resolving any challenge that may arise as a result of the police carrying out its law enforcement duties.
“In our line of work, we may step on the toes of some of our brothers and sisters. If there is anything of that nature, instead of them mobilising to attack the police, they should let us use dialogue to solve the problem,” he said.
The newly appointed IGP made the remarks when he led a delegation of the police management board to call on the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, at his Fadama residence in Accra on Monday.
He commended the Chief Imam for his mediation role in resolving conflicts over the years that ensue between the police and the Muslim community.
He also relished the support of the Muslim community in his previous role as the regional commander of the police service and was hopeful that the community would be instrumental in his tenure as the IGP.
The IGP said the country was fortunate for the cordiality that continuously exists between the two major religious groups in the country, adding that “I can assure you that my best friends are in the Muslim community.”
The National Chief Imam prayed for the IGP and asked that he gets all the needed support of his subordinates.
He also prayed for President John Dramani Mahama to have wisdom and foresight to implement all the good policies that would inure to the benefit of citizens.

His spokesperson, Sheikh Armeyaw Shuaib, said the office of the National Chief Imam was ready to support the police in carrying out any programme that would sustain peace and enforce law and order in the Muslim community.
“The door is open. Anytime you want to embark on any programme leading to more discipline and order, the Chief Imam says he is ready,” he said.
IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, a former Deputy IGP, was appointed to replace Dr Akuffo Dampare.
