Imams pledge to keep mosques free from partisan politics

Accra: Imams and Muslim leaders have pledged to keep mosques free from partisan mobilisation, while promoting accountability, anti-corruption and economic empowerment within Muslim communities.
They said mosques should remain spaces for worship, moral guidance and peaceful civic engagement rather than platforms for partisan political mobilisation.
The commitment formed part of resolutions adopted at the Conference of Regional Imams and Islamic Clerics held in Accra from October 4 to 7, 2026, on the theme: “Empowering Imams with Timeless Leadership Skills for Resilient Muslim Communities in Ghana.”
In a communique, the conference called on Imams to use their sermons to promote peaceful participation in democratic processes, respect for state institutions and dialogue, while discouraging political intolerance, hate speech and attacks against individuals, ethnic or religious groups.
It also urged Imams to strengthen preaching on accountability, integrity and the responsible use of public resources as part of efforts to promote ethical leadership and combat corruption.
On economic empowerment, the conference encouraged the effective use of zakat, sadaqah and waqf to support education, skills development and micro-enterprises within Muslim communities.
It proposed that mosques should play a greater role in supporting livelihoods and entrepreneurship, including through financial literacy and savings initiatives.
The participants further proposed the establishment of a national network of empowered Imams to facilitate continuous leadership development, knowledge-sharing and community resilience.
The network, they said, would support the institutionalisation of Imam training and equip religious leaders with skills to respond effectively to emerging social, economic and governance challenges.
The conference also expressed concern about misinformation and inflammatory content on social media and proposed measures to promote responsible communication, including training interpreters to faithfully convey messages during Friday sermons without adding inflammatory expressions.
The resolutions formed part of a broader effort to strengthen the capacity of Imams to provide responsible religious and community leadership while contributing to peace, social cohesion and sustainable development.
