Accra: Quba, an Islamic school located at Nima, a suburb of Accra, has emerged as the winner of a football competition involving 20 madrasas (Islamic schools) in the Greater Accra region.

The football competition was part of sporting events lined up at the 2024 inter-madrasa games, which took place at the Kotobabi Wembley Park over the weekend.

After winning four rounds of matches, Quba faced Khairul Ummah in the final and won 5:4 on penalties.

Both teams progressed from the semis, with Quba beating Ansarul Islam by 3 goals to nil and Khairul Ummah winning against Huda Islamic School by 2 goals to 1.

In other events, Ain Shams won the female Sack Race and Ampe competition, while Khairul Ummah and Hamdaniya Islamic School won the lime and spoon and the tug of war competitions, respectively.

During the opening ceremony, Yussif Jajah Issaka, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North Constituency, said he had invited some football scouts to look out for talents as the games progressed.

He urged the participants to also take their education seriously and be committed to honing their skills.

Speaking on the rationale behind the games, Ali Sabit, an organiser, said in a Facebook post that the event is intended to be part of activities to make the madrasa, also known as makaranta, attractive centres of excellence.

“We came up with sporting activities to complement the academic training that these students receive. It is a known fact that the Zongos are bevvies of talented sportsmen, and we believe that such sporting activities shall lead to unearthing the next great sportsmen for our country,” he said.
