Award-winning Muslim personalities at the 49th SWAG Awards

The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) held its 49th awards ceremony, where it recognised the contribution of corporate entities and individuals for their contribution to the growth of sports in Ghana.

Here is a list of some Muslim sports personalities that were honoured on Friday for their excellence in various sporting disciplines.

Ayisha Aminu – Discovery of the year

The 18-year-old beneficiary of the Captain One Golf Society’s kids project was the eventual winner of the Captain One Kids Golf Tournament.

She would later win the Latex Foam medal in May at the Royal Golf Club, finishing second at the Ohum tournament at Tafo Golf Club in Koforidua.

In June of last year, she competed and won the Pan African Komatso Tournament at the Nsuta Golf and Country Club.

Abdul Aziz Issah – Footballer of the Year/Prospect of the Year

He won the golden boot at the CAF Confederations Cup after scoring four goals and providing two assists in 10 matches, helping Dreams FC reach the semifinal stage of the competition.

In the GPL, he contributed to 17 goals, scoring seven and assisting ten, showcasing his ability to both score and set up teammates to find the net.

 He also won a gold medal at the 13th African Games after leading the Under 20 side to victory in the competition.

Mariam Yussif—Student Athlete of the Year

The St. Louis Senior High School student was a silver medallist in arm wrestling at the 13th African Games.

She had also won gold medals in shot put, discus, and basketball at the Ashanti regional super-zonals competition.

Amadu Mohammed – Boxer of the Year

He was a gold medallist at the 13th African Games. He was honoured for his skills, determination, and triumph that elevated Ghanaian boxing.

Mukarama Abdulai – Female home-based footballer of the year

Hasaacas Ladies FC forward helped Ghana win a gold medal at the 13th African Games and won the Ghana Women’s Premier League.

Previously she had captained Ghana’s team during the 2018 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Uruguay, where she won the Golden Boot for her tournament-best seven goals and two assists.

After her exploits with the team, she was adjudged the Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2018 by SWAG, beating Grace Asantewaa and Faustina Ampah to the award.

Bawa Fuseini – Sport Administrator of the Year

As the Director of the National Sports College, he led the Ghana Athletics team to win seven medals at the 13th African Games, secured four medals at the African Athletics Championship, and successfully hosted the African Zone 2 Athletics Championship.
