Remembering illustrious Ghanaian Muslims who passed away in 2024

What tends to be a journey of success and growth for some turned out to be that of pain and sorrow for others.

As we remain hopeful of better days, months, and years ahead, we must spare a moment to remember the loved ones we lost over the past year.

This article, therefore, is a chronological compilation of illustrious Muslims in Ghana who died in the year 2024.

 May Allah have mercy on their souls.

Hajia Muniratu Imoro (January 3, 2024)

After years of serving Ghanaians sumptuous meals, the famous waakye seller at Labone Junction in Accra passed away at the age of 72 at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) after a short illness.

She was so popular for her trade that she featured prominently in the minds of Ghanaians through music lyrics and mentions from prominent figures such as politicians, athletes, and media personalities.

A well-attended prayer ceremony was held for her on January 21 at the Ghana Police Mosque in Cantonment. 

Fuseini Mumuni (January 13, 2024)

Fuseini Mumuni, a bodyguard for Samira Bawumia, the then Second Lady of Ghana, died in a motor vehicle accident on January 13, 2024, and was buried the following day.

Fuseini was part of the convoy accompanying Samira Bawumia when the accident occurred at Ohene-Nkwanta in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The accident involved two Toyota Land Cruisers, a Mercedes Benz car, and a Sprinter Benz bus.

Eight people, including Samira, were injured in the accident.

His Janaza attracted the high echelon of the political class, including the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; Chief of Staff, Frema Opare; and many others. 

Dr. Mustapha Ahmed (February 7, 2024)

The 63-year-old dentist had been battling with some undisclosed condition for some time, bringing an end to his illustrious career as a soldier, medical officer, and politician.

He had reportedly travelled to India to seek medical intervention, but it was not successful.

Dr. Ahmed served as the sports minister of Ghana’s fourth republic for a brief period of eight months, starting in June 2015 during the John Mahama administration. 

He succeeded Mahama Ayariga, who had moved to lead the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation in January 2016.

Prior to his ministerial appointment, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed had a remarkable career as a Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Ayawaso East Constituency from 2001 to 2013 under the National Democratic Congress (NDC); he later moved to Ayawaso North after it was carved out from his previous constituency. 

Rashid Bawa (March 14, 2024)

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rashid Bawa, died in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday, 14 March.

The body of the 64-year-old legal practitioner was flown to Ghana and buried at Kadjebi on Friday, March 15, 2024.

The government decided to bid him a national farewell on Saturday, April 20, to appreciate his immense contribution to Mother Ghana.

Bawa is a Ghanaian politician, diplomat, and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).The former MP had previously served as Ghana’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia.

He was the Member of Parliament for the Akan Constituency from 7 January 2001 to 6 January 2005 as an independent candidate.

In June 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named him as Ghana’s high commissioner to Nigeria.

Bawa was an independent candidate in the Third and Fourth Parliaments of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.

He was elected as the Member of Parliament for the Akan constituency in the then Volta Region. 

Hajia Rahmatu Sharubutu (March 27, 2024)

She was the second wife of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu.

Her death was announced by the family after she passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

She was buried at the Awudome ceremony after her funeral rites were held at the Fadama residence of the national chief imam, attracting a lot of sympathisers, including political leaders, scholars, traditional rulers, and other groups. 

Lt Col Nuruddin Quaye (May 5, 2024)

Ghana Muslim Mission Imam

Lieutenant Colonel Sheikh Nuruddin Quaye, the Greater Accra Regional Imam of the Ghana Muslim Mission (GMM), has died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on Sunday, May 5, 2024, after suffering from an undisclosed illness.

His Janaza (Islamic funeral rites) was held on Monday, May 6, 2024, at the Teshie Military Training School (Teshie Barracks) and buried at the military cemetery near Tse Addo.

The National Secretariat of the Ghana Muslim Mission announced the demise of the beloved Imam in a press statement, where it extended its condolences to the immediate family of the deceased and the entire Muslim community in Ghana.

Until his demise, Lt. Col. Sheikh Quaye, who happened to be the assistant national imam of the mission, was very active with his clerical duties. 

Dr. Alhassan Mohammed (August 8, 2024)

The former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana died on August 8 at the age of 92.

His janaza was held on Friday, August 9, 2024, at the Ghana National Mosque, Kanda, after Jummah prayers. He was later buried at the East Legon Cemetery in Accra.

Dr. Mohammed, who was the director of the Research Department of the Bank, rose to the position of deputy governor from 1982 to 1986.

He also acted briefly as a governor before becoming the ambassador of Ghana to Saudi Arabia and later Guinea-Conakry.

He was well known for his intellectual and financial support of the Muslim community in Ghana.

Muhammad Hussain Bagnya (November 7, 2024)

The Muslim scholar and media personality died on November 7 after battling a protracted illness.

His Janaza was held at the Nungua central mosque before being buried at the Nungua cemetery.

Before his death, he was the host of the “Light upon light” Islamic program on Asaase Radio, the executive secretary of Ta’lim Ghana, a civil society group, and a host of the defunct Iqra show, which was an Islamic program that aired on TV3.

He was also an imam at the Asma Banda Mosque, where he used to lead prayers and deliver sermons.

He attended the International Islamic Call College in Tripoli and later the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration. 

Alhaji Abdul Mumin Haroun (December 17, 2024)

The Ashanti Regional Chief Imam died at the age of 74 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi Tuesday night after a short illness.

Imam Haroun, before his death, was one of the longest-serving imams of the Ashanti region.

Prior to his ascension to the throne in 2011, he deputised Sheikh Imran Musah, the late Ashanti Regional chief Imam.

His funeral “Janaza” prayers were held at the Kumasi Central Mosque, and he was buried at the Tafo cemetery. He left behind two wives and six children.

In January 2025, Sheikh Abdul Rahman Zakaria was inaugurated as the new Ashanti Regional Chief Imam at a ceremony supervised by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, in Kumasi. 

Sheikh Umar Abdul Kadir Coulibaly (December 25, 2024)

The Bono Regional Imam passed away after battling an illness on December 25, 2024, leaving the Islamic community in the Bono Region in deep mourning.

The 88-year-old, enstooled as regional chief imam in 2002, served for 22 years, earning respect as a scholar, philanthropist, and distinguished farmer.

He was buried on December 27, 2024, at the Sunyani Muslim cemetery. He left behind four widows and 16 offspring.
