Ya’akub Zakaria elected as new GMSA national president

Sunyani: Ya’akub Zakaria, a pharmacy technician, has been elected as the new national president of the Ghana Muslim Students Association (GMSA), with Adam Abdul Aziz, a former Bono regional president, serving as vice president.

The 30-year-old was vetted and elected at the sixth biennial national GMSA congress held at Sunyani GNAT Hall, Bono Region.

The event was held on the theme “Reconnecting the Past, Rebuilding the Present, Sustaining the Future of GMSA”.

At the end of voting by delegates from across the region, the president-elect secured 88 votes as against his contender, Saddik Alhassan, who garnered 51 votes.  

Ya’akub Zakaria, a native of Hamile, located in the Lambussie Karni District of the Upper West Region, was born on April 10, 1995.

He attended the Hamile Primary School before proceeding to the Hamile Islamic Junior High School.

He later pursued general science at the Kanton Senior High School in Tumu, where he served as GMSA Imam and the Student Representative Council’s (SRC) general secretary.

Upon completion, he went to the Dr Hilla Liman Technical University, formerly Wa Polytechnic, to pursue a Higher National Diploma in pharmaceutical science and later a Bachelor of Technology in Procurement, Logistics, Supply Chain Management.

While there, he served as the GMSA president and later the SRC president.

Ya’akub takes over from Tamim Mohammed Amin, an accounting and finance professional who leads the student body with focus on Islamic values, academic excellence, and student empowerment across educational levels in Ghana.
