Arab and Muslim leaders condole death of Moroccan King’s mother

Accra: Mohammed VI of Morocco has received messages of condolences and prayers from Muslim world leaders since the passing of his 78-year-old mother, Princess Lalla Latifa, whose death was announced by the royal palace on Saturday evening.

Princess Lalla was the widow of King Hassan II, who happened to be the father of the reigning King Mohammed VI.

According to the MAP, the royal palace statement said, “As we mourn this painful loss, we ask the Almighty God to shower the deceased with his infinite mercy and grant her paradise, and to prolong the life of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God preserve him and perpetuate his glory.”

Key among the leaders included the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and Monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

In his cable, the King said: “We have been informed of the news of the death of your mother, Princess Lalla Latifa, and we send to your Majesty, the brotherly people of Morocco, and the family of the deceased our deepest and sincere condolences. We pray to Allah Almighty to bestow His mercy on her soul and to protect you from any harm.”

The crown prince also said, “I send to your Majesty and the family of the deceased my deepest and most sincere condolences. I pray to Allah Almighty to bestow His mercy on her soul and to protect you from any harm.”

The Amir of Qatar, His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, and His Highness the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani sent cables of condolences to King Mohamed VI of Morocco on the death of his mother, Princess Lalla Latifa, praying to Allah Almighty to bestow His mercy upon her, grant her a place in Paradise, and inspire the honourable royal family with patience and solace.

The president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, also conveyed his sympathies on X by saying, “Deeply saddened over the passing of HRH Princess Lalla Latifa, mother of His Majesty King Mohammed VI of Morocco.

“I extend my sincere condolences to King Mohammed VI on behalf of the entire Pakistani nation on the sad demise of his mother,” the post read.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, dispatched similar messages to the monarch.

King Abdullah II of Jordan also sent a cable to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, expressing condolences over the passing of his mother.

In the cable, the Jordanian monarch extended condolences on behalf of the people and government of Jordan to Morocco’s monarch, the royal family, and the Moroccan people over Princess Lalla Latifa’s passing.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, sent similar messages to the Moroccan king.

President Sheikh Mohamed sent a message of “condolences and sympathy” to King Mohammed following the announcement, and he said, “I extend my sincere condolences and sympathy to King Mohammed VI of Morocco and his family on the passing of his mother, Princess Lalla Latifa. May God have mercy on her and rest her soul in eternal peace.”

The rulers of the Emirates have sent separate condolence messages, including Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah; Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Ruler of Ajman; Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Ruler of Fujairah; Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain; and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

Their crown princes and deputy rulers also sent similar cables to the Moroccan king.

Princess Lalla belonged to the prominent Amahzoune family, which is part of the Zayane tribe.
