Accra: The Ghana Hajj Taskforce, a committee tasked with administering hajj in the absence of a substantive hajj board, has discovered an accumulated debt of $5 million from the previous hajj board.

This consisted of a $446,933 debt to catering service providers, $4,429,260 for carrier flights, and about $533,333 for education and teaching services.

Alhaji Collins Dauda, Chairperson of the Taskforce, made this known on Wednesday when he addressed the media at a press briefing to announce the new hajj fare for the 2025 season.

He said the government would initiate an investigation into the development, which he said was worrying, especially when pilgrims are known to have fully paid their hajj fares in previous years.

The Member of Parliament for Asutifi South announced that the new hajj fare was GH¢62,000, a 17.3 percent reduction from the 2024 fare of GH¢75,000.

He said due to the nature of the discrepancies, the Taskforce has decided to set up a new account as the existing account has become a subject of investigation.

He said payment of the new hajj fare would start as soon as the new account becomes active.
