‘Insulting elders will deprive you of blessings’ – Chief Imam warns youth

Accra: The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, has warned against disrespecting and denigrating elders and leaders in the society.
He noted that such a condemnable act is grievous and could deprive a person of blessings and opportunities in life.
“To subject your elders to insults, disregard and demean them is to close your doors to blessings. And remember, disrespect will close unto you doors which apologies will not be able to open,” said Sheikh Armeyaw Shuaib, the spokesperson of the National Chief Imam.
He gave the warning during the National Muslims’ Thanksgiving Prayer Service held in Accra on Wednesday.
The remarks happen to be the first public statement since the incident of vandalism involving alleged supporters of the chief imam and traders at the Kokompe spare parts dealers at Darkuman in Accra, a week earlier.
According to reports, a funeral procession taking place within the trading vicinity resulted in the blockading of roads, which denied access to the convoy of the chief imam that included a police escort.
There were also activities of windscreen shattering on the road, a dangerous activity synonymous with funerals of spare parts dealers at Kokompe.
Despite the convoy eventually making it through the congested vicinity, an alleged party of sympathisers of the Chief Imam later stormed the place and vandalised property, mainly vehicles parked on the shoulders of the road.
Though the office of the national chief imam had disassociated itself and condemned the act, the religious leader has come under attack online, mostly from non-Muslim youth who made derogatory remarks against the 107-year-old cleric.
Sheikh Armeyaw said a country seeking to reset its values must understand what the Ghanaian values are and whether citizens imbibe those values.
He also expressed condolences on behalf of the chief imam for the lives lost during the Monday, June 29, floods that ravaged homes and destroyed properties.
