Accra: Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh, a Ghanaian politician, has sued the first national deputy of the Ahlussunnah Wal Jama’a Muslim group, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Samudeen, for defamation.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate in the 2024 general election is, among other things, seeking an amount of GHS10 million in damages and a published retraction and apology.

He is also seeking a perpetual injunction against the cleric and his associates from making any defamatory remarks against him and a declaration that the statements made against him were defamatory.

In a suit filed at the Kumasi High Court on January 20, 2026, Dr Prempeh, popularly referred to as NAPO, accused Sheikh Kamil of harming his reputation by alleging that he was involved in homosexuality, a statement the plaintiff described as a “calculated and malicious attack on his character”.

He contended that he has never engaged in homosexuality or any form of criminal or immoral act.

“The plaintiff contends that the defendants made the aforementioned statements with the intent to tarnish the plaintiff’s reputation and also court public disaffection for him,” the suit read.

At the centre of the legal tussle is a widely circulated video of Sheikh Kamil, who appeared to be speaking Twi in a mosque behind a lectern in language during the 2024 election campaign period.

According to the plaintiff, he was described in the video as a successful 57-year-old politician who was a homosexual and not interested in women but was forced to marry when he became the running mate of the NPP.
