Accra: Sheikh Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam, has declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day of Eid-ul-Fitr and will hold Eid prayers at the Black Stars Square tomorrow.

The declaration comes after the sighting of the Shawwal crescent in the Ashanti and Bono regions of the country, which signifies the end of the Ramadan month.

Sheikh Armeyaw Shuaib, the spokesperson for the national chief imam, said at a press briefing that the crescent was sighted in locations such as Wenchi in the Bono region and parts of Kumasi in the Ashanti region.

The National Chief Imam cautioned the youth against recklessness during the Eid celebrations.

Muslims in Ghana officially commenced Ramadan on Thursday, February 19, 2026, following the local sighting of the Ramadan crescent.

Others also began the fast a day earlier based on sightings abroad.

The fasting, which was observed for 29 to 30 days depending on the start date, culminates in celebrations that entail feasting, praying and outdoor celebrations to mark the end of the obligatory fast.

Ramadan, the fourth pillar of Islam, is an obligatory fasting period for all Muslims of sound mind and health.

It entails abstaining from food, water, and intimacy during the day, and it involves the intensification of worship throughout the month-long period, which serves as a moment of reflection, reform, and purification of the soul.

During Ramadan, acts of kindness and compassion are highly encouraged especially towards the less priveledged in society.
